• NSAIDS: These are usually the first medications prescribed to treat minor cases of gout. They will usually be prescribed at the highest dose possible and then lowered as symptoms subside. NSAIDS should be taken until all inflammation and pain have been absent for two full days. Patients who have gastrointestinal issues may be prescribed NSAIDS with COX-2 inhibitors.

Colchicine can be utilized in a few ways: take regularly in small doses over a long period of time or taking a large dose over a short time.

• Corticosteroids: Otherwise known as adrenocorticotropic hormone, this is useful for patients unable to take colchicine or NSAIDS. An acute case of gout will by treated with a daily 30mg dosage of prednisone for four days, and then gradually tapered over the next few weeks. Unlike many other gout medications, this is given as in injection, with many being needed.

• Allopurinol: The brand name would be Zyloprim and is given for gouty arthritis or chronic gout, and works by altering the body’s system that produces uric acid. This medication is intended to keep gout attacks from occurring, not treat them after they occur.

• Probenecid: This is also given to treat gouty arthritis and chronic gout. It is also used to prevent and not to cure. This helps the body to get rid of uric acid by affecting the kidneys.

• Sulfinpyrazone: This is used as a treatment for gouty arthritis and is a Uricosuric agent. It functions by lessening the uric acid content in the blood, which prevents attacks of gout. This is yet another medication designed to prevent attacks and not treat them after they occur.

• Losartan: This is not particularly known as a treatment for gout. However, it does help control a person’s uric acid level, which can indirectly help prevent gout attacks.

• Fenofibrate: Another medicine that in not specifically known as gout medication yet lowers lipids in the body, which aids in controlling the uric acid level.

• Analgesic painkillers: These are used to combat the intense pain of gout.
